Modifications in Movable Type

Now that I've got Movable Type installed, I'll need to make some customizations. The reason why I have chosen MT is the sheer fact that it is flexible, robust, and gives me access to the templates. Since I spent 5 years as a Web developer, being able to access things like templates and system files is borderline human nature.

In version 3.2 of MT, I have made some minor modifications:

1. I added tag-this-post functionality to the footer of each post so that users can bookmark any posts in del.icio.us. Via Joshua Schachter del.icio.us blog.

2. I wanted MT to generate an RSS feed for every category that I create on-the-fly. Why would I want to do this? A few reasons really and I can get into one of them now. Content on this blog will vary to some degree. But for the most part, it will be about blogging, multinational firms, knowledge transfer and diffusion, and some technical content on RSS feeds and publishing platforms. While my adviser supervising the dissertation may be interested in the whole blog, there is a good chance he'll only want to read posts that have to do with say the Resource Based View of the Firm, or content that is more academic rather than technical. By having feeds generated dynamically by category, no one will have to wade through content that doesn't interest them.

Thanks to Girly Matters for the tutorial.

3. In addition to generating RSS feeds by category, I wanted MT to output Technorati tags for each post so that my tags would interface with Technorati's Blog indexing engine. Thanks to John's Jottings for the code snip and his pointers to other sources.

I managed to do these things with relative ease, and I'll think I'll leave things pretty much how they are. While I may pipe in some feeds from del.icio.us or other resources, that will come later and shouldn't be too difficult.
